Helpful suggestions to protect yourself and buy with confidence
Buying a used car from a private seller can be a great way to save money, but it does come with more responsibility. Unlike buying from a dealer, the condition of the vehicle and accuracy of the information provided rests entirely between you and the seller.
To help you feel more prepared, we’ve put together some tips and things to look out for. These aren’t mandatory or comprehensive just a helpful guide. The final decision to purchase the vehicle is yours.
MONEYME provides finance only. We are not involved in choosing or inspecting the vehicle, and we do not take responsibility for the car’s condition, history, or the seller’s conduct.
PPSR report - This check shows if the car is stolen, written off, or under finance.
💡 MONEYME will run this report as part of our loan process.
VIN and engine number - Make sure these match the registration papers.
💡 MONEYME will also verify these details during the application process.
Service history - Ask for the logbook or receipts. Regular maintenance reduces your chances of issues later.
Registration & Roadworthy Certificate (RWC) - Confirm the car is currently registered and has a valid RWC in your state. This is essential for a legal and safe handover.
Body & paint - Walk around the car. Look for dents, rust, scratches, or mismatched paint. Uneven panel gaps, sagging doors, or bubbling paint may hint at past damage or rust.
Interior - Check for damage, odours, pet fur, stains, and the condition of seat belts, windows, locks, and air-con.
Dashboard - Look for any warning lights. The odometer should line up with the car’s age. 15,000 to 20,000 km/year is typical in Australia.
Under the hood - Make sure the engine branding matches the seller’s description (e.g. i-VTEC, Skyactiv, Ecoboost).
Glass & lights - Check for cracks, chips, or fogging in the lights. Make sure all indicators, headlights, and brake lights work.
Transmission & brakes - During your test drive, gears should change smoothly and brakes shouldn’t squeak or grind.
Tyres - Tread must legally be at least 1.5mm deep. Uneven wear may point to alignment issues.
Test drive - Always test drive the car. Pay attention to acceleration, steering, braking, and any strange noises.
If you're financing through MONEYME, you'll receive a contract to review and sign online.
MONEYME will transfer the funds directly to the seller or their financier (if the car is still under loan).
It’s your job to transfer ownership through your state’s road authority usually within 14 days of purchase.
A quick reminder: This article is general advice only. MONEYME does not inspect, approve, or take any responsibility for the condition or legality of the vehicle you choose to purchase. Please conduct your own due diligence and consider getting an independent inspection if you’re unsure.
